GOLDEN SHORES
WHILE YOU ARE HERE...
THE COLORADO RIVER, in the Golden Shores area, provides some of the finest boating and water skiing anywhere. With a current of 4 to 8 miles per hour, wakes disappear rapidly, leaving the “smooth as glass” effect that all water skiers are looking for. Fishermen love our hefty rainbow trout, catfish, crappie, largemouth bass and stripers that are found in the spring. There is a good supply of boats, tubes, kneeboards and ski rentals available in the area.
Play golf at any of the numerous golf courses in the area at very reasonable rates.
The Mohave National Preserve is located to the west of Golden Shores. Visitors can see ranching activities and historic mining operations. You can hike through and around the “Hole in the Wall” area, traverst the old Mojave Road as the Indians, soldiers and homesteaders did. Geologic features such as Cima Dome, the Cinder Cones, and the Kelso Dunes add to the visual sites. Animals such as Bighorn sheep and desert tortoises can be seen in this scenic area. For further information contact the Mojave National Preserve at 760-326-6322.
Mitchell Caverns are located in the Providence Mountain State Park within the Mojave National Preserve Area, approximately 70 miles west of Golden Shores. These caverns are limestone caves that feature stalactites, stalagmites, flow-stone and other formations of interest. Cavern tours, lasting a little more than an hour and requiring a 1.5 mile hike, are available daily Labor Day weekend through Memorial Day. Throughout the summer weekend tours begin at 1:30p.m. For information on tours call 760-928-2856.
By boat or canoe, Topock Gorge and Havasu National Wildlife Refuge can provide many hours of enjoyment for visitors from all parts. Topock Gorge is located just 7 miles south of Golden Shores on the Colorado River. Gaze at rock formations in the ravines, lava rock pinnacles, totems and arches are everywhere. There are ancient indian hieroglyphics on the Gorge’s beautiful wall - if you know where to find them... For a great way to see the Gorge, by canoe, contact Jerkwater Canoes, 928-768-7753; by sea-doo, contact London Bridge Watercraft Tours, 800-732-3665. Havasu National Wildlife Refuge is located between Golden Shores and Lake Havasu City along the river. Cattail, mesquite and arrowhead beautify the marsh and provide habitat for doves, quail, beaver, geese, and other wildlife. Contact 760-326-3853.
Visit the Mystic Maze, a National Wildlife Refuge Systems Archaeological Site, located about 5 miles south of Golden Shores at Interstate 40. Precise arrangements of rocks have led some people to believe that this was an ancient agricultural project, but experts have said “no”. Museum: 760-326-5678.
Oatman is located just a beautiful scenic 25 miles northeast of Golden Shores. Oatman merchants have endeavored to keep this famous gold mining center as authentic as possible. Step back in time, enjoy the burros that walk freely throughout the town and the mock old west gunfights, while browsing and watching for the perfect antique that you cannot go home without.
Grapevine Canyon consists of Indian petroglyphs on sheer cliff walls in a canyon with year round streams. Just a short drive up Hwy 163 from Laughlin, Nevada, turn at Christmas Tree Pass, then at the Grapevine Canyon sign to the parking area. A short hike is required.
Other day trips include: Old West town of Chloride, Quartzsite, Hualapi Mountain Park, Colorado River Museum, the London Bridge, Route 66 towns of Goffs, Essex, Amboy, Seligman, and Kingman.
For those who take residence here, the Golden Shores Civic Association has continuous activities for senior adults from September through May including day trips, meals, parties, and many other activities for those who like to keep active in the community.
