About Golden Shores / Topock, Arizona
Home Page: Golden Shores, Arizona
The charming little town of Golden Shores / Topock with less than 3000 residents is nestled alongside the Colorado River where people who love the outdoors can enjoy such sports as fishing, hunting, boating, off-roading and birdwatching.
The town is just north of Interstate 40, Exit 1, and is halfway between Lake Havasu City, home of the famous London Bridge, and Bullhead City, which is just across the river from Laughlin, Nevada, the "Little Las Vegas" which has become quite famous over the years for those who like to test their luck at gaming.
The Tri-State area is where parts of Arizona, Nevada and California all come together bringing unique flavors and finds from each part to one location all with the Colorado River in common.
People from all walks of life come to this area to live and work. There are the snowbirds who come only diring the winter months to escape the cold winters in other parts of the country and Canada; and then they leave again when the temperatures begin to rise. Then there are the true sun bunnies who love the desert heat ... some say, "the hotter the better."
There are families with school age children, while at the same time there are singles who like the party atmosphere ... and then again, there are semi-retired and retired who also like the party atmosphere that Laughlin has to offer. Some people have come here just to get away from the big city, while others come because they may like what the small cities have to offer. Some have moved here to fish, hunt, boat, off-road, or even gamble. One could say it's because of the Colorado River, that they moved here, while another might boast that it's because of Laughlin or Lake Havasu City, although the clear skies and the natural beauty is a big attraction for many.
The Colorado River is a major attraction of visitors from all over the world. The river water makes water play a very pleasant experience. Some people come here for the fishing while others like to raft or water ski, while still yet, many love taking their individual water crafts for a wild ride under the sun. There are various RV parks located along the river.
The bright lights of Laughlin lure many to the gaming rooms, buffets, restaurants and lounges, and of course, the shows. There is never a dull moment, and there's something for everyone. Now, most of the casinos even have arcades, and some now have child care facility.
North of Golden Shores is Fort Mojave, Mohave Valley and Oatman. The Golden Shores area is a growing community by the river known for its civic mindedness. Oatman, the old mining town, is a tourist draw hosted by a herd of wild burros just waiting for a treat. Needles, to the west, is a place where the history of the railroads lives on, where at one time, a Harvey House was located in the El Garces building.
With the town of Golden Shores located just 10 miles east of Needles along Interstate 40, the Topock Marsh is a splendid location to catch striper and catfish, while Havasu Wildlife Refuge is the place for birdwatching. Boats and personal water crafts can be launched from the Golden Shores Marina, and off-road vehicles can be driven for miles on the beaten paths thru the desert.
Golden Shores is hopping with activities during the fall, winter and spring.
(See: Schedule of Events)
From June thru August, Golden Shores becomes a sleepy little community because its so hot and the snowbirds go back to wherever they came from, but many summer visitors come to enjoy the water with their water craft, great night fishing, hunting and off-roading.
The Golden Shores Fire District started as a small volunteer fire department in 1975 and has grown to a fully equipped department with all the modern fire fighting and life saving equipment. It has a small group of paid personnel and a larger number of volunteers.
The Golden Shores Watch and Patrol, which was incorporated in 1995, has assisted in decreasing crime in its community to the lowest percentage of crime in the area.
There is no hospital in town, although the fire department is well equipped for medical emergencies, and the Colorado River Medical Center is located in Needles and the Western Regional Medical Center is located in Bullhead City.
Topock Elementary is the only school in town. It serves K thru 8th grade. High schoolers are sent to River Valley High in Mohave Valley.
